Director's Message

by Susan Tuck

I am an amateur, so all you professionals and experienced amateurs can keep on surfing the net.  This message is for beginners or people who are just thinking about getting their first horse and showing.  As I said, I'm an amateur.  I've done everything wrong or maybe backwards is more accurate.

I started riding at 44 on a four year old, it wasn't pretty but no one got hurt. The next year I rode a 3 year old, just adult walk trot.  In my third year, I was riding two four year olds; the fourth year, a five year old.

In my fifth year of riding, I started with a six year old but it wasn't going well.  I brought out the first four year  old, who was then eight and had been sitting in a field for three years. We did win one class and did pretty good in sporthorse in hand.

Last year I just did sporthorse in-hand and very little riding.
This year at 50, I'm riding a fifteen year old broke to death gelding. This is the type of horse I should have started with. Now I'm looking forward to this show season.

So if you're thinking of owning, riding and/or showing, start with a horse that knows more than you.

Good luck to everyone in the 2009 show season.
